color...paper...pressure...print! I invited everyone to my studio for a printmaking demonstration.
My main job at the Center was to work on new woodblock prints, but I went for a walk in the woods every day and immersed myself in nature. I found a Praying Mantis case, brought it home, and they hatched in my studio.
"Serenity. Light. Space. Privacy. The ability to work uninterrupted for hours, days, weeks in a quiet studio cradled in 450 acres of rolling Blue Ridge farmland. These are just a few of the reasons why more than 300 of the world's foremost writers, composers, and visual artists come to the VCCA each year." • / www.vcca.com

IMPACT CONFERENCE - Berlin and Poznan, Sept 2005
Perhaps the most exciting thing to grow from my trip to Japan was an invitation to speak at the IMPACT printmaking conference in Berlin and Poznan, Poland. This September I traveled there to give a short talk and a portfolio presentation with an international group of printmakers who had also worked at the Nagasawa Art Park. It was a fabulous trip. Berlin and Poznan were great to explore, but the greatest pleasure was meeting so many terrific printmakers: • /www.aprilvollmer.com/berlin05/ NEW WORK I came back from Japan with hundreds of photos, so I spent the first six months after my return working on a series of artist books. "The Square Flower Portfolio," "Swimming in the Sea of Japan" and "Visiting Japan" all incorporate my digital photos from Japan. "Does it Flow in Belgrade" was created from scans and e-mailed photos from Belgrade for an exchange exhibit. This fall, after teaching my first woodcut class at the new and improved Lower East Side Printshop (on 36th St!), I finally started work on new blocks. It felt great to touch my Japanese tools again! Southern Graphics Council meeting in Washington, DC. I attended the meeting along with 1000 other printmakers from across the country (and Lisbon): • /www.aprilvollmer.com/sgcdc/ Over the summer I taught woodblock workshops in California, New York, Connecticut and New Mexico.
