Iteration,
new woodcuts by April Vollmer. The installation centers on large mandala woodcuts, complex symmetrical prints designed with the help of the computer and printed in the traditional Japanese woodcut technique.
The prints are iteration of simple natural forms, rotated and duplicated in virtual space to make complex patterns. These designs are transferred to wood blocks for cutting and printing. Personal images of nature--grape vines, insects, birds--are transformed by this step-wise process into objects of contemplation. These prints use the cool mathematical power of the computer to explore meditative inner states.
This exhibition follows a digital show last fall, and incorporates a new understanding of space that comes from last year's sojourn in virtual reality.
