Roman Fugu
(DNA edition)

15" x 16" on Hiromi's handmade Eichizen paper
Twelve colors, edition 25

...The 1997 print reissued as Fugu rubripes, with SPOTS!

Sam Aparicio, the genome scientist who contacted me about illustrating his group's article on the decoding of Fugu DNA, asked me if my image was indeed Fugu rubripes. I checked, and found my source to be a different species, one with stripes instead of spots. I told him I could adjust the pattern by cutting another block, and decided to print a new edition, with spots, on handmade Japanese paper. The genome scientists admired the way the Roman mosaic border twists in a helix like DNA.
